Up front: Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked event lands on 22 July 2026 in London — the day Samsung will officially unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. We're a foldable case designer, we've been designing against the leaked CAD since March 2026, and this is what we believe with confidence as of 17 July, five days out. Every claim below has a source. Where the leak record is soft, we say so.

This is not a rumour aggregation. It's a launch-week reference for the people who plan to pre-order — organised the way a case designer thinks about it, because case fit is the question that decides whether an existing accessory ecosystem carries over or gets thrown out.

The two-phone launch — what Samsung is actually announcing

Every credible leak in the last 30 days aligns on this: Samsung is launching two book-style foldables at Unpacked on 22 July, not one.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 — the new shorter-and-wider variant. 5.5-inch cover display, 7.6-inch inner foldable display, dual rear cameras (50 MP + 50 MP ultrawide), 4,800 mAh battery, 25 W wired charging.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra — the taller-and-narrower flagship. 6.5-inch cover display, 8-inch inner foldable display (4:3 aspect ratio), triple rear cameras (200 MP + 50 MP ultrawide + 10 MP 3× telephoto), 5,000 mAh battery, 45 W wired charging, Samsung's new Flex Titanium hinge, and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy. Weight: 218 grams. Folded thickness: 4.1 mm unfolded.

These are not the same phone. They share almost no case tooling. This is the biggest split in the Galaxy Z Fold line since it launched.

The Ultra is what most Z Fold owners have been waiting for

Every leak points the same direction. The Ultra keeps the classic taller-narrower Z Fold proportions but pushes every spec upward: bigger displays, more cameras, more battery, faster charging, Flex Titanium hinge for improved durability and reduced crease visibility. The 5,000 mAh battery paired with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5's power efficiency should translate to genuine all-day battery life on a foldable for the first time in years.

The 200 MP main + 10 MP 3× telephoto pairing is what Samsung Ultra buyers have been asking for on the foldable line since the Z Fold 6. It's the S26 Ultra sensor stack in a foldable body. Case designers care about this because a bigger, deeper camera island means every existing Z Fold case with a fitted rear cutout gets thrown out.

The base Z Fold 8 is a genuinely new shape

The shorter-wider variant has been reported for months, but the finalised dimensions are only just confirming. Folded profile: roughly 123.9 × 81.9 mm. That's closer to a Pixel Pro Fold or a book-style device than the Z Fold's traditional shape. Cover display 5.5 inches — smaller than the Ultra's 6.5-inch. Inner display 7.6 inches — same diagonal as the Z Fold 7 but new aspect ratio.

This is Samsung experimenting. It's not the safe upgrade. The Z Fold 8 is aimed at buyers who want a foldable but find the classic Z Fold uncomfortable in the hand or the pocket.

What the two phones share

Almost nothing tooling-relevant. Same processor (Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy). Same RAM tier (12 GB). Same base storage tier (256 GB). Same software (One UI 9.0 on Android 17). Same USB-C port location. Every dimension a case designer measures — folded profile, hinge width, cover-screen lip, camera island geometry, button layout — is different between the two.

What's Flex Titanium and why does it matter for case designers

Samsung's new hinge material — a titanium alloy film combined with a titanium plate in the hinge area, confirmed for the Z Fold 8 Ultra. It improves overall hinge durability, reduces the visibility of the display crease over long-term use, and reduces the thickness of the hinge module. For case designers, it means the hinge spine profile is slightly different from the Z Fold 7, which affects hinge-cover case dimensions. Our Sentinel H1 and Vanguard H1 lines are being re-tooled for the new hinge geometry.

Pricing — what to actually budget

Leaked European pricing points to €2,199 for the Z Fold 8 Ultra base model with 256 GB. Historical EUR-to-USD conversion suggests approximately $2,099-$2,199 USD, £1,899 GBP, A$3,299 AUD, and C$2,999 CAD for the Ultra base. The standard Z Fold 8 is expected to slot roughly $200-$300 below the Ultra at every tier. Samsung has not confirmed any of these numbers.

Pre-order timing — what to plan for on 22 July

Samsung Unpacked kicks off at 2:00 PM BST / 9:00 AM EDT / 11:00 PM AEST on 22 July 2026. Pre-orders open the same day, immediately after the announcement. Retail availability is expected approximately 5 August 2026.

Carrier pre-orders (Bell, Rogers, Telus in Canada; Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile in the US; EE, O2, Vodafone in the UK; Telstra, Optus in Australia) sometimes lag by 24-48 hours.

The case-fit reality

Will your current Z Fold 7 case fit the Z Fold 8? Depends which Z Fold 8. Neither perfectly. The base Z Fold 8's shorter-wider profile means no Z Fold 7 case will fit. The Z Fold 8 Ultra's traditional aspect ratio is closer to the Z Fold 7's, but the revised hinge (Flex Titanium), revised camera island, and revised button layout mean fitted cases don't carry over.

What FoldifyCase is preparing. We've been designing against the leaked Z Fold 8 CAD since March 2026. Halo M1 and Sync M1 tooling is already progressing for the Ultra dimensions; the base Z Fold 8's new aspect ratio required a separate tooling programme.

What we're still uncertain about

S Pen support. Multiple supply chain leaks suggested the Ultra's slight thickness increase versus the Z Fold 7 could accommodate a digitiser layer, but Samsung has not confirmed. 22 July Unpacked will confirm or rule it out.

Under-display camera improvements. Leaks about the Ultra's under-display technology are inconsistent.

Qi2 magnetic ring alignment strength. Confirmed Qi2 wireless charging on both models. Ring strength unclear until we can measure a retail unit.

For Australian buyers

Samsung Australia opens pre-orders simultaneously with global reveal. Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone typically launch pre-order plans on the same day with trade-in credits. AU pricing expectation for the Ultra: approximately A$3,299 for the 256 GB base.

Our verdict — what we'd tell a foldable buyer five days out

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 series is the most interesting Z Fold generation Samsung has shipped since the Z Fold 3 introduced water resistance. The Ultra is the safe premium upgrade for anyone who owned the Z Fold 6 or Z Fold 7. Budget around US$2,199 / A$3,299 / £1,899 / C$2,999 for the 256 GB.

The base Z Fold 8 is the experimental play. If you found the traditional Z Fold too tall and narrow to comfortably one-hand, this is Samsung's answer.

Either way, buy the phone first. Buy the case second, from a specialist, three to four weeks after launch when validated cases are shipping. Existing FoldifyCase customers get a 10% early-bird discount with code FOLDBLOG10 in the launch email.
