First, the naming is genuinely confusing
Samsung split the Z Fold line into two devices this year, and the names do not work the way most people assume.
- Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is the direct replacement for the Z Fold 7. Same tall, narrow book shape. Same folded footprint. Costs more.
- Galaxy Z Fold 8 — despite the simpler name — is the new product. Shorter, much wider, with a 4:3 inner display. It was rumoured for months as the "Galaxy Z Fold Wide".
So if you owned a Z Fold 7 and you want the same phone but newer, the model you want is the one called Ultra — not the one called Z Fold 8. This trips up a lot of buyers, and it matters enormously for accessories.

The case-fit finding that matters
We design foldable cases, so the first thing we do with any new Samsung foldable is compare folded dimensions against the outgoing model. This year produced an unusually clean result.
Z Fold 8 Ultra vs Z Fold 7 — folded
158.4 × 72.8 × 8.9 mm — identical on both. Same weight too, at 215 g.
The only dimensional change between the Z Fold 7 and the Z Fold 8 Ultra is unfolded thickness: 4.2 mm down to 4.1 mm. A case wraps the device when it is closed, so a tenth of a millimetre on the open panel does not affect fit.
In practice that means a well-made Z Fold 7 case should fit the Z Fold 8 Ultra. One honest caveat: published specifications do not include camera-island geometry or button positions. Those are the two things that break an otherwise perfect fit, and they can only be confirmed against a physical unit. If you are buying a case for a Z Fold 8 Ultra, check that the seller states Z Fold 8 Ultra compatibility explicitly rather than assuming.
The standard Z Fold 8 is a different story
Folded, it is 81.9 × 123.9 × 9.7 mm against the Ultra's 158.4 × 72.8 × 8.9 mm. It is shorter, far wider, and thicker. No Z Fold 7 case will fit it, and neither will a Z Fold 8 Ultra case. It needs tooling of its own.
If you have just bought the wider Z Fold 8 and a listing claims it fits "Z Fold 8, 7, 6 and 5", treat that as a red flag — those are not compatible geometries.
What actually changed since the Z Fold 7
Taking the Z Fold 8 Ultra as the like-for-like successor:
- Charging is the real upgrade. 25W to 45W wired, and 15W to 20W wireless. Samsung quotes 67% in 30 minutes. This is the change you will notice daily.
- Battery up 600 mAh to 5,000 mAh, in the same body, using a silicon-carbon cell. GSMArena measured 13:06h active use against 11:44h on the Z Fold 7.
- Brighter panel — 3,000 nits peak versus 2,600.
- Ultrawide jumps from 12MP to 50MP. The 200MP main and 10MP 3× telephoto carry over.
- Newer silicon — Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, and Android 17 out of the box with seven years of OS updates.
What did not change: the folded size, the weight, the IP48 rating, and the side-mounted fingerprint sensor. It is a refinement year on the hardware and a step change on charging.

What is the difference between the Z Fold 8 and the Z Fold 8 Ultra?
The Ultra is the tall, narrow successor to the Z Fold 7, with a 200MP camera, a 3× telephoto and a 5,000 mAh battery. The standard Z Fold 8 is a new wider 4:3 design with a 7.6in inner screen, dual 50MP cameras, no telephoto and a 4,800 mAh battery. It is lighter and cheaper but a very different shape.
Is the Galaxy Z Fold 8 waterproof?
Both models carry an IP48 rating — protected against dust particles larger than 1 mm and immersion up to 1.5 m for 30 minutes. That is water resistance, not waterproofing, and it does not cover salt water or pressurised jets.
